Rob Van Den Plas

My first VAT advice: In 1996.

Experience: Rob started his career at Loyens in 1996 and moved to Arthur Andersen/Deloitte in 2000, where he became partner at the VAT department. Throughout his career, he specialized in VAT advice, VAT planning and VAT restructuring, both on a national and an international level. Rob is speaker at several schools, seminars as well as training sessions.

VAT Focus areas: Medical and pharmaceutical sector, real estate and non-profit.

The reason I like working at Vatsquare: Working with my colleagues and our clients brings me joy every day.

Something personal: I like to try out new things and love culinary adventures in pleasant company (cooking and consuming).

Jurgen Opreel

Experience: All-round VAT advisor with expertise and in-depth knowledge on all aspects of VAT.

Prof VAT at the Fiscale Hogeschool in Brussels and author of the VAT Basic Course, btw-onderlijnd, Fiscale Actualiteit and numerous other VAT publications.

Speaker at numerous seminars, internal trainings and international conferences.

VAT Focus areas: Monitoring and analyzing all VAT developments on Belgium and EU level. I ensure that colleagues and clients are rapidly informed with all latest developments.

Koen Dewilde

My first VAT advice: In 1997.

Experience: Throughout my career, I always focused on the development of a state-of-the-art VAT practice.

As junior advisor with Arthur Andersen, I was the key driver for developing the VAT practice at the company’s Ghent office.

After a merger with Deloitte, I moved to Central Europe, where I helped in developing the local Deloitte unit’s tax practices after EU accession. I lived in Bratislava and Budapest for years, and have great experience with large inbound investment projects in Central Europe and I am culturally aware of the region.

On my return to Belgium, I was involved in certain start-up projects and I was one of the co-founders of Vatsquare.

VAT Focus areas: EU VAT compliance, supply chain, e-commerce and public sector.

The reason I like working at Vatsquare: I can make jokes anytime I want.

Something personal: I like cycling through and wining and dining in Zeeland.

Karen Truyers

My first VAT advice: In 2005. The first advice I remember was for a fashion retailer expanding in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Experience: I started my career in 2005 with KMPG and continued with Deloitte from 2012 until 2020 when I joined Vatsquare. During the years I delivered VAT advice and VAT compliance for small, mid-market and multinational companies in a wide range of industries. Also for many years I combined client work with Belgian and pan EU knowledge, innovation and technology. I give seminars on diverse VAT topics and also teach VAT at the UCLL.

VAT Focus areas:  International trade, supply chain, manufacturing and real estate.

The reason why I like working at Vatsquare: the positive and collaborative working atmosphere.

Something personal:I like to discover new things and new places so traveling is on top of the bucket list.

Evy Van Dijck

My first VAT advice: My first VAT advice dates from 2004, when I started my traineeship as a lawyer at the VAT department of an international tax law firm. One of my first experiences was preparing a case before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg concerning the VAT rate applicable on private movie shows.  

Experience: I advised national and international businesses on all kind of matters related to VAT. Advising clients on structuring their business, representing clients before the tax authorities, performing VAT audits and screenings and organizing VAT trainings are part of my daily practice. 

VAT Focus areas:   I am particularly interested in real estate business transactions, but also like working on goods and service transactions in operational business environments.

The reason I like working at Vatsquare:  Offering pragmatic and actionable advice to our clients gives me a lot of satisfaction. On top of that, working with colleagues who are always in for fun make it a perfect place to work for me.

Something personal:Hiking or cycling are the perfect relaxation moments for me, just as having a good time with friends and travelling to explore new places.

 

Kim Bar

My first VAT advice: My first advice was back in 2006. It was for a well-known Italian chocolate manufacturer!

Experience: I started my career at Deloitte in 2006 and continued my career at EY in 2015. In 2018 I joined Vatsquare. Over the years, I assisted national and multinational structures active in a wide range of sectors and for plenty of different projects (VAT advice, planning, audits, trainings, compliance etc.).

VAT Focus areas:  at local level, I focus on the French speaking market (Brussels and Wallonia) but love exploring further and also assist several international clients. Speaking about VAT at seminars, in-house trainings or alike events keeps me a lot busy as well.

The reason I like working at Vatsquare: team spirit at the service of our clients, integrity, quality requirements.

Something personal: A good evening with good friends and good wine, what else !? For the rest, quality family-time, hiking, reading a good book, and I’m the happiest girl.

Francis Vandenweghe

Experience: I started my career with Arthur Andersen Belgium and joined Deloitte after the merger. He lived in Madrid for a year, working at Deloitte, Madrid. In 2016, Francis joined Vatsquare. I have experience in many aspects of VAT compliance and advice including some specialized VAT topics ( vehicles, vouchers, travel sector, energy sector and public sector).

VAT Focus areas: Energy sector, public sector, vouchers and travel sector.

Something personal: I am passionate by Spain (and I used to live there for 1 year back in 2016)

My first VAT advice: December 1, 1999. A US based company reached out to us to check on the pan-EU VAT and Intrastat aspects of setting up a Belgian hub for their EU B2B and B2C customers.

Experience:  I started my career with Arthur Andersen in 1999 and worked many years as VAT Director at Deloitte. In 2016 I joined Vatsquare where I continue to focus on VAT and Intrastat compliance (Belgium and EU) for companies ranging from SME’s to multinationals.

VAT Focus areas: International trade, Belgian and pan-EU VAT and Intrastat compliance, logistics sector

The reason I like working at Vatsquare: Vatsquare’s deliberate choice to go for a hands-on, practical approach rather than longish theoretical memos requiring an executive summary to be somewhat understandable

Something personal: If I don’t immediately respond to your e-mail or can’t take your call, chances are I’m walking my 4 dogs (Tess, Noa, Raike and Scotty).

As in-house VAT advisor at Fortis and via several on-site client projects I also gained experience in the internal working as well (a.o. link with accounting and other departments) and worked with several ERP and accounting systems.

Experience:  Erik worked in VAT administration for 20 years as a fiscal expert, verifier and inspector for local VAT control offices and at the administration’s Head Office in Brussels. Besides, he has gained immeasurable work knowledge and expertise as the VAT Director at Arthur Andersen/Deloitte.

My first VAT advice: In 2010 advising a company established abroad on the Belgian VAT implications of their transactions in Belgium and assisting them with their Belgian VAT registration and compliance.

Experience: I started my career at a Big 4 company advising and assisting all sorts of companies with their broad-ranged Belgian VAT questions and compliance. After 5 years, I wanted to practice what I preached and wanted to see what happened with such advice in practice. I therefore transferred towards a Fortune 500 company to advise and assist on in-house EMEA VAT questions and compliance. After another 5 years, I now want to use all that gathered experience to advise and assist Vatsquare customers with their Belgian/EU VAT questions and compliance.

VAT Focus areas: Belgian and EU VAT registration and compliance plus related advice on international trade,… .

The reason I like working at Vatsquare: I’m able to maintain my preferred combination of VAT advisory and compliance work – incorporating my experience on both BE and EU level.

Something personal: have 2 small, but not to be underestimated, daughters that require a lot of my time and devotion. Time-off (from them and work), I like spending with my boyfriend and/or friends enjoying lovely/relaxing/… drinks and/or meals.

Experience: I soon rolled in to a HR focussed role as a job consultant for USG People. After various roles in different departments, including providing in house services at large companies, I headed my own branche office with a team of job consultants servicing a wide range of industries.
Whilst gathering experience in providing the right staff for my clients, I realised that I could do more..
As of 2010 I’ve been focussing on optimising and streamlining administrative processes for several organisations.
